America’s 50 Best hospitals demonstrated superior and sustained clinical quality over an eleven year time period, based on an analysis of more than 140 million Medicare patient records. To be recognized with this elite distinction, hospitals must have had risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates that were in the top 5% in the nation for the most consecutive years.

On average, patients treated at America’s 50 Best Hospitals had a nearly 30% lower risk of death and 3% lower rate of complications. HealthGrades study found that if all U.S. hospitals had performed at this level, more than a half million Medicare deaths could have been prevented between 1999 and 2009.

Health Grades Announcing 2011 Hospital Patient Saftey Excellence Awards

What does it mean to achieve Patient Safety Excellence? It means realizing the lowest comparable risk-adjusted incidence of patient harm. HealthGrades is celebrating National Patient Safety Week by recognizing the nation’s top-performing hospitals with our eighth annual Patient Safety Excellence Award.

In this annual study of patient safety, HealthGrades evaluates the impact of 13 types of patient safety events that occur in American hospitals. Preventable medical errors are so pervasive and costly to the government that the proposed rule for the hospital value-based purchasing program for Medicare inpatient services released in January 2011 contains four measures of patient safety utilizing the AHRQ Patient Safety indicators.

U.S. News evaluated almost 5,000 hospitals to rank the best in 16 adult specialties from cancer to urology. Death rates, patient safety, and reputation with more than 9,000 specialists went into the 2010-11 rankings. Childrens Hospitals

For the 2010-11 rankings, U.S. News requested data from 170 pediatric centers and used survey results from thousands of physicians in 10 pediatric specialties who were asked where they would send the sickest children. In all, 62 hospitals ranked in at least one specialty. The Honor Roll features eight hospitals that ranked in all 10.

Nursing Homes

The 12 nursing homes listed alphabetically below, culled from more than 15,500 homes in the latest U.S. News America’s Best Nursing Homes rankings, make up the Honor Roll. They had to get four straight quarters of perfect five-star ratings from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in each of the three categories in which the agency evaluates nursing homes: health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care. Several are pediatric facilities, defined as nursing homes because they provide Medicaid-funded long-term care or skilled rehabilitation services.

America’s Best Hospitals

Amy Camarow of US News & World Report speaks about the methodology used to determine America’s best hospitals.

That patient, who truly needs outstanding care, is the target of the annual U.S. News “Best Hospitals” rankings, in which hospitals are judged not in routine procedures but in difficult cases across an entire specialty. This year, the 19th, hospitals are ranked in 16 specialties, from cancer and heart disease to respiratory disorders and urology. Out of the 5,453 hospitals put through a rigorous statistical mill, only 170 scored high enough to appear in any of the specialty rankings. (Data for military and veterans’ hospitals are unavailable.) And only 19 of the 170 made the Honor Roll of medical centers ranked at or near the top in at least six specialties, as explained on Page 72. This year, for the first time, data and scores are available online for more than 1,500 hospitals that in the end fell short of being ranked.

Hackensack University Medical Center Named Top 50 Hospitals in America

HUMC became the only New Jersey hospital named to the “HealthGrades America’s 50 Best Hospital” list identifying an elite class of top-performing facilities. HUMC is the only hospital in New Jersey, New York, and New England to be named to the list. 2008 marks the second consecutive year HUMC has achieved this honor. The HealthGrades designation represents the healthcare industry’s only quality ranking based solely on objective clinical outcomes among U.S. hospitals. Hackensack is a member of the NJHCQI Provider Council.
